Graduation Dress Empty
PostSubject: Graduation Dress   Graduation Dress EmptySat Jan 21, 2012 10:40 am

Happy new year!! As it is already January, I decided to get a head start on my graduation dress. I know what you’re thinking, “Graduation’s still 6 months away you crazy person!” Or… maybe you’re not thinking that. But with my procrastination problem, It’s better to be safe than sorry.
I’ve recently been watching Say Yes To The Dress a lot. My friend Izzi and I like to make fun of the brides. (I know… I’m a Shallow person, but you should see the people who come on this show) My favorite episode we’ve seen so far is called Lady In Red, where a bride tries on a tea length gown, with six layers of rainbow tulle. I thought “Oh my God, That is amazing”, Myself being a fan of color, I decided I loved it.

For my graduation dress I want to make a casual rendition of that dress, With white eyelet fabric for the skirt, and either a Strapless, or tank bodice.
I’ll keep you posted

You can't really see the rainbow tulle but, it's there..

So if anyone knows of a pattern or something that's similar to this dress please let me know... Thanks!

Don't think it's silly to get a wiggle on it now - better to have it done and hanging up for months than not finishing it!

Just checking you realise you'll need ALOT of netting. And not tulle. Tulle is fine. You'll probably need extra stiff netting and quite a few meters of it (this one used 32meters!!! http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=251557.0)

This pattern is free: http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns/lace-strapless-dress

A strapless dress should have boning in it thought unless you want to pull it up all night.

I'd change the skirt for a circle skirt - something that doesn't look like it's been done in the picture you pointed us to...much to its detriment - you can see half way down the skirt a ridge/bulge. That's where the skirt isn't big enough to encompass all the underskirt I believe. there are like a trillion circle skirt patterns online (for free)...what I would say is make sure you take away 2 inches from your measurement before you work out the radius! It's much easier to make it bigger and take away material, than if you've cut it too big!

Good luck and make sure you share some pictures!

had another look at the picture - the 'skirt' is gathered on that dress - which creates the details around the waist. A circle skirt will create a cleaner look (and you won;t have the netting bulge issue)

Thanks so much, I wasn't planning on using tulle for the bottom, It isn't a formal event... It's held at a park. I'm quite the beginner, so I don't know what kind of fabric to use... Any other kind of help would be good, this is my first BIG project so as much help as possible would be good... Thanks so much again
