| Hey everyone!
I'm Holly, from the UK. Most days you'll find me strumming a ukulele, nomming bourbons and planning whimsy gifts. I got into crafting through my textiles A-level, where I pissed off my teacher royally by making evening dresses out of recycled bin bags and making case studies of robots and porn mags. I've always thought that the fashion industry is a complete circus; design shouldn't be taken seriously. What should be taken seriously (and what is often forgotten) are the starvation wages paid and the de-unionisation of work places so that we can have cheap clothing (boo and hiss!). So, I use craft as a way to subvert expectations and challenge capitalist attacks on human beings... I also use craft to make stuff look pretty.
I'm so excited to jump in and get involved with this place! See you around!

| Aw, fanks! Only one picture exists and it's a tiny little thing locked in on my old mobile Sadly, it really only lives on in my memory. I might draw up the design and post it someday, I may even find a way to get it onto the computer and on that day, I will rejoice. Basically though, what I did was heat the plastic so it wrinkled and crinkled and got a really nice texture to it (it also was strong enough to go through the machine that way); then I pinched and pinned in about ten or so random darts which followed my model's form in a very random kinda way, then they got sewn in with silver thread. Because I was working with recycled scraps, the fabric was a very irregular shape so I didn't really have a clue of how it was going to end up; it turned out as a one-shoulder, floor length gown. Then, once I was happy with the general shape of it I attached hundreds of seed beads the colour of oil-slick to the bodice to add to the natural shine of the fabric. And finally, because the project was about the contrast between the human body and tough robot-y exteriors (Thierry Mugler and Wangechi Mutu were my main inspirations - pictured) I made a chicken wire and mesh samurai armour which strapped over like a bustle. Man, I haven't thought about it in ages! I wish I still had the dress. | |
